CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT & INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING
The teacher designs curricula and plans instruction based on knowledge of the subject matter, student needs, community, and curriculum goals (including State and City performance standards) for an inclusionary model of instruction.
To create well-planned units and to design an appropriate curriculum, it's important to know where the students are at ability wise and to recognize what their different needs regarding the material might be. In addition, a clear working-knowledge of the core state learning standards is essential.
The unit plan attached below is from one of my first few classes as a graduate student at Wagner College. Although I now have greater awareness as to how to design a fun, engaging lesson plan that meets all of my students needs, even from the very beginning it was the state standards that guided the material I selected to teach my students.
Another thing I really appreciate about this unit plan is that it's evident how knowledgable I am on the subject matter and how passionate I am to teach this topic. The unit plan posted after is actually much, much more advanced and thoughtful regarding differentiating. I feel the second better highlights my growth, but that the first gives a basis for where I began.
