LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
From the very beginning of the year, a teacher's ability to create a positive classroom learning environment is something that shows. It's in everything from classroom management to how much gets covered throughout the course of the day.
If done correctly, the classroom environment should be one that encourages students to think independantly, holds students accountable for their actions, develops a community and family amongst the students, and rewards the students for their hardwork and positive behavior. It should promote a sense of pride and caring for one another and should be relaxed. In my opinion, a stable, positive classroom learning environment may be the ONE constant aspect in many of the children's lives, so it's key.
In the photo above, Isabella is showing off her April award for good behavior. The students in my classroom regularly receive check marks that add up to a monthly total based on good behavior. There is no reward other than this award, but most are absolutely thrilled to have something to show their parents.
Everything from the design of the classroom to the demeanor of the teachers plays a huge part in the learning environment. Through experience, I've determined that my future classroom will be colorful but highly organized into subject areas, will place students in cooperative learning groups based on ability levels, will incorporate daily use of the computers and technology and behaviorally will center around the use of positive behavior modification. In the photos below you can see some aspects of the postivie behavior modification I like to implement. This includes everything from daily homework incentive charts (as opposed to punishment for not doing homework), being allowed to participate in huge chess games for fun or fun outdoor games as a reward, or occasionally homemade treats as rewards. To me, positive behavior modification is much more successful than punishment.

MY IDEAL CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT
Spending so much time in so many classrooms has given me a clear idea of what my ideal classroom environment will be like. The room will be bright but structured and will function using regular routine. Since I tend to be creative, I'll set up monthly themed areas. All of this will excite the students when they come into my classroom! Though learning is always top priority, I want to create an environment that they are proud to be a part of. Everything will demonstrate their work, including our bulletin board!
The file below is a presentation I did regarding working with students with emotional disturbances. Background knowledge like this will be useful in creating an environment for my students that is peaceful and harmonious regardless of personal challenges they have.
